Japanese Style Name Plates

You will find this, or something similar enough, in every Japanese office and dormitory (as far as I know). It serves as a "status indicator", i.e. whether you are in or out. Finding mine in the picture should not be difficult.

Wow... this is something new. How does this system work?

The one here is quite different from the normal type. As of the usual type, there is a tag for each person, and on one side of the tag is your name with a red background, while the other side is the same thing except with a white background. Red indicates "out" while white indicates "in". You just flip it to the right side when you go in and out.
The one shown here though has a similar but different mechanism (this is the one in my dorm). Instead of flipping, you hang a little orange tag onto your hook when you go out. The orange tag also has another use. It actually serves as a "power key??" too, like those found in hotels where you slip in your "power card/key" into a slot to turn on the main power.
Anyway, this flip board thingy is really old fashion, I think.
